Overview

Each workshop has a small number of participants (7 maximum) ensuring 5 1/2 hours of studio time. This workshop will offer a unique and fun learning opportunity for each participant to learn the basics of casting and get a well-rounded understanding of two fun and accessible casting processes. The workshop is an introduction to small scale casting using the cuttlefish bone casting method and the Delft clay casting method. Both of these methods will:

• provide immediate results
• require minimum investment

Using the backbone of a cuttlefish as a mold, participants will carve into the soft bone to create a form to cast into. Bronze is then melted and poured into the cuttlefish bone mold. The resulting positive reveals unique and interesting textures provided by the cuttlefish bone. Next the workshop focuses on casting bronze into Delft clay. Delft clay is a reusable molding material that provides quick results and helps to retain intricate details without the use of expensive equipment.

Workshop includes all materials, use of tools and the studio fee will include bronze for casting models. Each participant will create at least two small finished objects.

Requirements

1. Participants must be 18 years of age to enroll.
2. This workshop does not offer academic credits or certification.
3. There will be no refunds once the workshop has begun.
4. Workshops are limited to 6 participants with a minimum enrollment of 1.
5. Bring a sketchbook or note pad with you to the workshop and two flat or shallow small objects that may be reproduced (such as a medallion, a shell, bottle cap, coin, etc.).
6. Wear appropriate clothing (ie. steel toe boots, jeans, long sleeve shirts), NO open-toed shoes or synthetic clothing. Cotton & denim only.
7. All other tools, safety gear and materials will be provided.

Logistics

These Saturday & Sunday afternoon workshops are held in the beautiful Cincinnati neighborhood of Northside and are conveniently accessible from both I-75 and I-74.

Single day workshops:

• Saturday, Feb. 6th, 2016, 11:00am – 2:00pm (Delft clay process – $95)
• Saturday, Feb. 27th, 2016, 11:00am – 2:00pm (Cuttlefish process – $95)
• Tuesday, March 8th, 2016, 11:00am – 2:00pm (Delft clay process – $95)
• Thursday, March 10th, 2016, 11:00am – 2:00pm (Cuttlefish process – $95)
• Sunday, April 10th, 2016, 11:00am – 2:00 pm (Delft Clay process – $95)
• If enrolled for both processes, cost will be – $175.  Payment in advance required.
• If you are unable to schedule on any of the list days, please send an email as weekday workshops may be arranged in advance.
